Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua, Casas Grandes (Paquime), ca. 1280 to 1450 CE. An impressive stone metate of a massive rectangular form with raised outer edges on its 2 longer peripheries. Trough metates are similar to mortar and pestles in that they were developed as nether stones in food preparation such as grinding herbs and corn into flour, and other utilitarian purposes, such as pulverizing clay to temper fine particles. A great example of this large tool! Size: 20.2″ L x 13.6″ W x 6.9″ H (51.3 cm x 34.5 cm x 17.5 cm)

Condition: Stable hairline pressure fissure travelling vertically down both sides of stone. Weathering and surface wear commensurate with age as shown. Otherwise, intact with rich earthen deposits.

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-private Estate collection, Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA, acquired 1960 to 2024
