Lot 142, Auction 4/12/2024: Ancient Anatolian Iron / Bronze Axes, ex-Piscopo

Sold

Ancient Greece & Near East, Anatolia, Bronze Age to Iron Age, ca. 1600 to 500 BCE. A pair of cast copper and iron axe or chisel heads both with a flared end and projecting lugs – while similar in shape, these may have been from different cultures and eras, seeing that the larger is iron and the smaller is copper. Similar blades known as trunnion or lugged axes have been found in Greece, Italy, Crete, Cyprus, Anatolia, and the Near East. Molds for lugged axes have also been found by archaeologists at the important Hittite site of Kultepe in central Turkey. These blades may have been used as chisels or adzes and attached to a wood handle by lashing around the lugs. Size of largest: 7.5″ L x 2.25″ W (19 cm x 5.7 cm)

Condition: Expected wear to both, but overall good condition, slight indentation and nicks to the blade ends. Heavy brown patina and pitting to surface on larger blade due to iron content.

Provenance: private Everett, Massachusetts, USA collection, purchased from Artemis Gallery in 2016; ex-John Piscopo estate
