19th C. Balinese Wood Kris Handle w/ Shell Inlay

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden kris handle depicting an expressive deity, perhaps the hero demon Bhima. The figure is incised with delicates decorations and colored with red pigment, perhaps to mimic a demon’s skin color. Size: 1.75″ W x 5″ H (4.4 cm x 12.7 cm); 7.8″ H (19.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Minor nicks and abrasions, with a couple of stable hairline fissures, softening to finer details and pigment, and light earthen deposits, otherwise in great condition. Nice form.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
