In stock

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-carved wooden mask of broad, red-painted form with a prominent nose and a petite mouth. The diamond-shaped eyes are decorated with black pupils atop white sclera, and the concave back was intended to fit over a mummy bundle or a deceased body. The head is adorned with a beautiful headdress comprised of camelid or cotton fibers woven into elaborate patterns or colorful tassel balls in myriad hues. Size: 3.25″ L x 12″ W x 11.7″ H (8.3 cm x 30.5 cm x 29.7 cm); 19.875″ H (50.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Mask and headdress are from the same time period but are likely not original to one another. Small chips around periphery of mask, with expected desiccation and fading to textiles, otherwise in great condition. Nice preservation to facial features and most textile colors. Previous inventory label on verso.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010; ex-Eugene Lions collection, Geneva, Switzerland
