$573.75

In stock

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A superb and large smoking pipe made from contrasting textures: a highly burnished bowl, legs, and mouthpiece, with a twisted and pitted stem. In Pre-Columbian Mexico, tobacco and other herbs were used for medicinal and ceremonial purposes, and an ornate pipe such as this may have been reserved for religious or elite members of society. Size: 9.75″ L x 3.5″ W x 5.2″ H (24.8 cm x 8.9 cm x 13.2 cm)

Condition: Chip and loss to mouthpiece corner. Restoration to majority of top rim, but done very well. Legs re-attached. Old inventory label on the underside of bowl. Earthen and manganese deposits on the surface.

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-private Estate collection, Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA, acquired 1960 to 2024
