Lot 13, Auction 4/20/2026: Mississippian Stone Crowned Mace Head

$910.00

In stock

Native American, Mississippian culture, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. A finely balanced and imposing monolithic stone ceremonial mace, its elongated shaft tapering to a rounded terminal and widening at the base into a flared, crown-like head marked by subtle lateral projections. Carved from a single dense stone and carefully smoothed to a soft, tactile finish, the form emphasizes both symmetry and authority, with the central collar creating a visual and functional transition between haft and striking end. Such crowned maces are closely associated with Mississippian elite culture and are widely interpreted as symbols of rank, ritual authority, and possibly cosmological power, rather than utilitarian weapons. Comparable examples have been recovered from major mound centers such as Cahokia, where they likely served as insignia of leadership or were employed in ceremonial performances reinforcing social hierarchy and spiritual order. Size: 11.9″ L x 3.6″ W (30.2 cm x 9.1 cm)

The present example, with its refined proportions and confident silhouette, embodies the quiet gravitas of Mississippian stonework, where power is conveyed not through excess, but through form, balance, and enduring material.

Condition: Chip to side and some weathering to surface as shown. Otherwise, intact and excellent with scattered earthen deposits.

Provenance: private Colorado, USA Collection
