Lot 128, Auction 4/26/2024: Tall Panamanian Gran Cocle Fruitera, Tonosi Type
$828.75
In stock
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, Tonosi type, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A tall example of a fruitera built from pottery with a deep basin and a broad, flared foot. The burnished surfaces provide a great canvas for the intricate red and black curvilinear motifs – mainly concentric circles, zigzagging rectangular boxes, and abstract geometric forms – across the basin, stem, and foot. Size: 8.625″ Diameter x 10.3″ H (21.9 cm x 26.2 cm)
Condition: Professionally repaired with restoration and overpainting atop new material along break lines. Abrasions, fading, and light craquelure to pigment, otherwise in great condition. Nice preservation to original motifs throughout.
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Howard T. Knapp collection, Florida, USA, from the 1960s to 1980s
