Lot 121, Auction 4/20/2026: Permian Amphibian Skull Fossil – Edingerella
$650.00
In stock
East Africa, Madagascar, Late Permian period, ca. 255 to 250 million years ago. A remarkably preserved fossilized skull of the rare Permian amphibian Edingerella madagascariensis, revealed in both positive and negative within a split nodule, offering a striking dual impression of one of Earth’s early tetrapods. The skull’s broad, flattened form, with discernible eye orbits and cranial structure, reflects the characteristic anatomy of temnospondyl amphibians that thrived in prehistoric wetland environments long before the rise of dinosaurs. Such fossils are exceedingly scarce, particularly examples that retain both halves of the enclosing matrix, allowing for a more complete study of surface morphology and bone texture. Size: 4.3″ L x 2.4″ W x 1.5″ H (10.9 cm x 6.1 cm x 3.8 cm); of skull: 2.3″ L x 1.8″ W (5.8 cm x 4.6 cm)
Dating to the Late Permian, a period marked by dramatic environmental change and culminating in the largest mass extinction in Earth’s history, this specimen captures a fleeting chapter of evolutionary history, preserving the fragile architecture of a creature that once inhabited a vastly different world.
Condition: Negative side of the matrix has been repaired. Some fissures and pitting from the natural fossilization process. Nicely preserved with great overall presentation.
Provenance: private Texas, USA Collection, acquired May 8, 2021 via Ancient Objects, Cranston, Rhode Island, USA
