Ancient Egypt, Late Period, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A pretty collection of ancient dark green faience tube beads and pale brown/ocher yellow faience seed beads, strung using modern materials, with an ancient bright blue faience menat amulet at its center. The menat, which looks to modern eyes like a keyhole, was a symbol of powerful women. The menat was a ceremonial item associated with the goddess Hathor, and her priestesses are commonly shown holding the emblem. Queens and ladies-in-waiting could also wear and/or carry the symbol. A lovely necklace comprised of ancient beads and modern sterling silver findings. Length of strand: 17.5″ L (44.4 cm); size of amulet: 1″ H (2.5 cm)

Condition: Patina on all beads. Two of the tube beads are in two pieces. Modern stringing and findings.

Provenance: private Salt Spring, BC, Canada collection; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-private Los Angeles, California, USA collection
