In stock

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Kenyah Dayak, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A child carrier composed of densely woven rattan attached to a half-circle wooden base, lined with printed cotton cloth. The exterior features a beaded panel (aban) of colored glass beads forming symmetrical white scrolling tendrils that represent hornbills. Other protective talismans are attached: a strand of yellow trade beads encircles the base, while animal teeth – likely including sun bear canines – are suspended along the top. At the center hangs a small brass bell, and conus shell discs with bead tassels adorn the sides of the aban. Such carriers were not only utilitarian but spiritual objects; colors and attached tokens often conveyed the gender of the child, while the teeth and bell added protective power. It was believed a child’s soul could wander into danger, so mothers secured infants in carriers imbued with prayer and protective symbolism. Size: 16″ L x 7″ W x 12.5″ H (40.6 cm x 17.8 cm x 31.8 cm)

Condition: Cotton lining is torn away from the edges and partially hanging loose. Minor losses to a few beads on the beaded aban panel, but overall well preserved. Chips and losses to enamel on the teeth. Chips and pitting to trade beads. Tightly woven and overall good condition!

Provenance: private Anahola, Hawaii, USA collection, acquired 1970s to 1990s
