In stock

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Dayak peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. Carved from dense ironwood, this elongated leaf-shaped bowl has sharply tapering ends, one narrowing to a pointed spout and the other rising into a stylized creature’s head. The terminal features a bulbous beak-like form suggestive of a hornbill or parrot, important birds in Dayak cosmology. The darkened patina enhances the sculptural contours and the natural luster of the ironwood. Size: 17″ L x 7.5″ W x 2.5″ H (43.2 cm x 19 cm x 6.4 cm)

Condition: Some nicks and abrasions to the surface, but otherwise intact.

Provenance: Private Los Angeles, California, USA collection; ex-Francois Coppens collection, Belgium
