Lot 143b, Auction 5/3/2024: Fossilized Brachiopod Seashells in Chert Stone Matrix

$318.75

In stock

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. 590 to 65 million years ago. A large chert stone mass containing fossilized brachiopod shells- both low relief and impressions from their shells. The shells are about 0.5 inches or less in size, overlapping and fragmentary pieces throughout, like a natural mosaic! Brachiopods are a type of clam with two shells, or valves, which lived in large colonies like we have in this example. This matrix clearly shows the individual ridges of many of the shells! Size: 9″ L x 4.75″ W x 2.25″ H (22.9 cm x 12.1 cm x 5.7 cm)

Condition: Intact without repairs or restoration. Partial shell fragments and impressions clearly in the surface.

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
