North America, United States, Southwest / New Mexico, ca. mid- to late 20th century CE. Yeehaw! A delightful ensemble of 7 Folk Art sculptures from the Old West: 5 wooden cowboys, 1 wooden Native American, and a porcelain cowboy head. All hand-painted and hand-sculpted, each caricature carving displays wonderfully expressive features and exaggerated characteristics, creating an air of playfulness and vivacity. Two sculptures are signed “Jes” on the lower back indicating they were made by Santa Fe artist Jes Gurule (American, d. 2000). Size of largest (red shirt without vest): 4.5″ L x 3.9″ W x 12.8″ H (11.4 cm x 9.9 cm x 32.5 cm)

Condition: One cowboy head is missing body; another cowboy head is detachable and missing front of hat. All have light expected surface wear with some chips and nicks, but otherwise, 5 are intact and all have great pigments and detail. Two are signed “Jes” on lower back for Santa Fe artist Jes Gurule, and 1 is signed “L.L.” on underside of right foot.

Provenance: private Cripple Creek, Colorado, USA collection
