$382.50

In stock

North America, The Caribbean, Hispaniola, Haiti, ca. late 20th century CE. A colorful and whimsical satin Vodou (Voodoo) banner known as a drapo, detailed with thousands of individually applied sequins and beads depicting a shimmering mermaid, “La Sirene.” Drapo is a Haitian Creole term that translates to flag, and generally associated with the special banners made for Vodou ceremonies and festivals to honor spirits – known as lwa (Loa), ancestors, or other deities. La Sirene is the wife to Agwe, the mythical king of the ocean, and she embodies an alluring and sensuous water spirit and queen of music. To one side the name “Jonas” is beaded next to a fish and is probably the artist’s name. Size: 22.5″ L x 19.5″ W (57.2 cm x 49.5 cm)

Condition: Some minor fraying and pulling to satin textile threads and small needle perforations along the yellow border from being attached / displayed. Beadwork and sequins are excellent, very minor and unnoticeable losses, if any.

Provenance: private Thornton, Colorado, USA collection
