Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra, Kerinchi culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-held brass ghanta (ghenta) bell crowned by a rearing singa, a feline-like guardian whose uplifted pose gives the piece a fierce and powerful aspect. Beneath the creature is a long handle and the base forms a four-faced Hindu-Buddhist deity representing Brahma looking to the four cardinal directions, followed by scrolling garland bands punctuated with flame-like projections. The lower register resolves into a ring of lotus petals just above the mouth. Inside, the bell is hollow with a suspension loop for a clapper ball (now missing). Size: 4″ W x 11″ H (10.2 cm x 27.9 cm)

Condition: Missing the clapper inside and does not function as bell. Heavy patina and weathering to surface, with softening to details. Pinhole perforations through the surface/

Provenance: private Rogers, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Bosio collection, Miami, Florida, USA, 1960-2000
