Lot 109, Auction 4/20/2026: Indonesian Majapahit Pottery Head
$292.50
In stock
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, Majapahit period, ca. 13th to 15th century CE. A finely modeled terracotta head from the Majapahit period, distinguished by its calm expression and confident sculptural presence. The face is softly rounded with gently closed eyes, a straight nose, and balanced features that convey composure and introspection. A textured topknot crowns the head, referencing formal hairstyles seen in Majapahit courtly and devotional imagery. The surface presents a rich earthen patina with subtle tonal variation, enhancing the sense of depth and age while preserving the clarity of the facial modeling. The fragment was originally part of a larger figure or architectural element, yet it stands compellingly on its own, reading as an intimate portrait rather than a remnant. Size: 5.1″ W x 8.1″ H (13 cm x 20.6 cm); 10.7″ H (27.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Terracotta sculpture flourished during the Majapahit Empire, prized for its warmth, immediacy, and expressive restraint. This head exemplifies those qualities, offering a refined and quietly powerful presence well suited to both scholarly collections and contemplative display.
Condition: Losses to areas of verso and heavy weathering to surface with flaking, chips, and abrasions as shown. Liberal remaining detail and rich encrustations throughout.
Provenance: private Dallas, Texas, USA collection
