Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. 19th century CE or earlier. A mortar dish known as a cobek, and a special pestle known as ulekan, a utilitarian cooking tool used in food preparation. The ulekan is shaped like a buffalo horn, the shape is particularly efficient for grinding peanuts or making sambal, a spicy chili pepper sauce. Nice signs of heavy use, with a lustrous patina and smooth edges to the abraded areas. As a former colony of the Netherlands, this set is sometimes labeled with the Dutch spelling: “tjobek” and “oelekan.” Size of cobek bowl: 7.25″ Diameter x 2″ H (18.4 cm x 5.1 cm)
Condition: Older age and use related wear with abrasions and chips throughout, with deeper gouges on the base. Nice patina to the surfaces, great weathering and signs of age. Light mineral deposits in recessed areas.
