In stock
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Sarawak, Iban Dayak peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A large wooden anthropomorphic mask carved from a single block of lightweight wood. The visage features an elongated oval face with projecting round ears fitted separately to the sides, eye openings, a prominent nose, and a narrow mouth with individually cut vertical teeth. Remains of white kaolin and black pigments highlight the eyes, nose, and lower face. Small iron nails remain embedded around the mouth, chin, temples, and ears. Several still secure fragments of coarse hair, indicating the mask once supported a full beard or additional coiffure elements. Condition: Missing hair that was once attached to surface. Chips and abrasions, with a few stable pressure fissures, but otherwise in stable condition. Dark patina and fading to pigments, but nice weathered appearance.
Provenance: Private Los Angeles, California, USA collection; ex-David Pusack collection
