$455.00
In stock
East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty to Republic period, ca. 19th to mid-20th century CE. A varied and visually engaging lot of eight Chinese pipe bowls dating from the late Qing Dynasty through the Republic period, crafted in porcelain, stone, and glazed ceramic. Each bowl reflects the widespread popularity of tobacco smoking in China during the 19th and early 20th centuries, when detachable pipe bowls were paired with long stems and often changed according to taste or occasion. The group includes globular porcelain examples, one decorated in underglaze blue with landscape motifs, alongside warm-toned peachbloom style glazing and darker stone or ceramic forms with faceted and octagonal profiles. Several retain side apertures for attachment to metal or bamboo stems, while others display small central perforations and traces of use around the rims. One carved pale stone example features incised decoration and a neatly drilled chamber, highlighting the range of materials employed in their production. Size of blue on white: 1.9″ W x 2″ H (4.8 cm x 5.1 cm)
Compact yet sculptural, these pipe bowls demonstrate both utilitarian design and decorative refinement, offering a concise survey of smoking culture in China from the late imperial era into the early modern period.
