East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A cast leaded bronze mirror of lobed, petal-like form, each of its eight scalloped edges adorned with a petite floral motif. At the center, a raised circular medallion presents a scene scholar stones beneath a tree. The central perforated knob (for stringing the mirror) rises from the middle. The reverse was once highly polished to a reflective sheen, serving as both a practical mirror and grave good. Size: 5.5″ Diameter (14 cm)
Condition: Chipping to peripheries as shown. Softening to relief details. Dark patina and oxidation.
