Native American, Southwestern United States, southwest corner of New Mexico, Mogollon Classic Mimbres, ca. 1100 to 1350 CE. An interesting example of a white-ground pottery bowl formed via the Puebloan coil-and-scrape technique with rounded walls that terminate in 4 rounded ‘peaks’ around the circumference. The interior surface is adorned with dense blocks of thin black stripes enclosed by thicker black bands, and a negative space ‘X’ is formed across the middle as a result, its arms stretching to the rim of each side of the walls. Condition: Professional repair and restoration, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and light fading to original pigment, with light earthen deposits, nicks around rim, and fire-darkening beneath base, otherwise in nice condition. Interesting form!
