Fine South Arabian Head

Beautifully sculpted in a fine calcite-alabaster, 3/4 life-size head of a youthful male, probably originally from a relief or marker placed in tombs as personal memorials. Depicted with a closely cropped, textured curly hairdo in contrast to his smooth face. Wide open, almond shape eyes with linear brows and well carved ears. According to the British Museum: “One of the characteristics of ancient South Arabian culture was the great attention paid to representing people at their best, as personal sculptures. Although each is recognizably of this culture, the variations in detail, style of dress and facial appearance suggest that there was a real effort to represent real individuals but in a general style”. Intact, overall exc. cond. A great example. Custom bronze base.
