Southeast Asia, Thailand, Chiang Mai region, Ban Chiang culture, ca. 3610 to 1000 BCE. A grayware pottery urn or storage vessel with a narrow foot, rounded lower body, ridged sides, and a wide flared neck. Hand-built and shaped with a paddle-and-anvil technique, the surface shows classic stippled and incised curvilinear motifs, a style dating to one of the earliest phases at Ban Chiang. Excavations at Ban Chiang revealed burials accompanied by grave goods such as bronze tools, jewelry, iron implements, figurines, and ceramic vessels like this example. Condition: Professionally repaired and restored from many pieces. Infill and new material added along breaklines and gaps and nearly indiscernible from exterior.
