Costa Rican Terracotta Tripod Bowl w/ Fish and Monkeys- Lot 83e, Auction 1/24/2019

Sold

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica/Panama, Chiriqui, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built terracotta bowl with a trio of stylized fish-form legs. Each hollow-form leg contains a small ceramic ball which creates a light rattling sound when jostled. A small bowl rests between the chin of each fish and has a rounded base, a corseted neck with incised zigzagging motifs, and a flared rim displaying a pair of charming monkeys. Vessels like this example are sometimes referred to as “chocolate pots” for its association with the coveted cocoa beverage or as “spider pots” for its leggy design. Size: 6.5″ W x 6.55″ H (16.5 cm x 16.6 cm).

Condition: Legs and vessel repaired from multiple large pieces with light resurfacing and adhesive residue along break lines. Small nicks to legs, body, rim, and monkeys, with softening to some finer details, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits throughout.

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
