$260.00
In stock
Europe, United Kingdom and Switzerland, Victorian period, ca. 19th century CE. A varied group of three European miniature paintings, each reflecting popular subjects and tastes of the 19th century. The lot includes a Victorian miniature tondo depicting the Royal Exchange in the City of London, shown with its neoclassical facade and surrounding figures, likely intended as a souvenir or commemorative object. Executed with careful architectural detail, it reflects the period’s pride in civic monuments and modern urban identity. The group also includes a Victorian miniature portrait of a gentleman bearing a strong resemblance to Prince Albert, presented in formal attire and rendered with restrained modeling and subdued coloration typical of mid-19th-century portrait miniatures. Completing the trio is a Swiss miniature landscape depicting Chillon Castle on Lake Geneva, a romanticized view of the medieval fortress popular with travelers and artists following the rise of Alpine tourism. Size of largest (frame of landscape): 5″ W x 4″ H (12.7 cm x 10.2 cm)
Together, these miniatures offer a concise survey of 19th-century European interests in portraiture, architecture, and picturesque landscape, unified by their intimate scale and careful execution.
