Pair of Jalisco Pottery Sheepface Figures

Sold

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A lovely set of two standing bichrome terracotta figures with white-painted details on a lustrous red ground. The first figure is modeled after a fierce warrior with a striped club and a curved shield with four abstract anthropomorphic designs. The figure displays an elongated nose, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, pointed ears with accompanying earspools, and a tall forehead with an elaborate headdress characteristic of “sheepface” depictions. The second figure has a more regal appearance, with attenuated limbs and similar sheepface facial details, wearing a broad shawl over one shoulder, and with a finely-braided headband. Both figures have painted bead necklaces and earspool adornments, and both are wonderful near-miniature examples from this ancient shaft-tomb culture. Size of largest: 4.5″ H (11.4 cm).

Condition: Upper tip of warrior’s club repaired. Both figures have age-commensurate surface wear, fading to white-painted details and red surface pigmentation, with abrasions and minor chips to bodies, ears, feet, and foreheads. Light earthen deposits, nice mineral deposits, and root marks throughout.

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
