Sold

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. Tweet, tweet, tweet! An endearing brownware ocarina depicting a sweet songbird, elaborately decorated with impressed and incised detailing, including four finger holes at the front and a blow hole at its tail end. According to Armand Labbe’s “Colombia Before Columbus” (1986), “Although Tairona pottery in general is well made and the sculptural lines are well defined, Fine Brown Ware tends to be the best executed and evinces the most detail with respect to incised decoration and distinction of forms.” Size: 2.875″ L x 3.25″ W x 2.625″ H (7.3 cm x 8.3 cm x 6.7 cm)

For similar avian ocarinas created by Tairona peoples, see Labbe “Colombia Before Columbus” New York: Rizzoli, 1986, figure 164, page 194.

Condition: Normal surface wear with a few scuffs/nicks and small loss to tail, but otherwise excellent and whistles beautifully.
