Greek Campanian Blackware Trefoil Oinochoe- Lot 21, Auction 12/20/2018

Sold

Magna Graecia, South Italic colonies, Apulian or Campanian, ca. 4th century BCE. A fine wheel-thrown oinochoe (pouring vessel) with a ring footed base, an inverted piriform body with dozens of well-defined ribs, a rounded shoulder, a narrow neck with a trefoil pouring spout, and an applied strap handle joining rim to shoulder. The majority of the body’s exterior and the interior of the rim are colored with a lustrous jet-black glaze, though the interior of the body as well as the underside of the foot still exhibit the pale-orange buffware color. Size: 4.375″ in diameter at widest x 6.875″ H (11.1 cm x 17.5 cm)

Condition: Handle and upper section have been reattached. Chips to rim. Expected surface wear with a few surface nicks/scuffs/scratches as shown. Red areas of the surface are a happy result of misfiring. Nice lustrous patina. Old inventory labels on base.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
