Asia Minor, Ionia, Phokaia, ca. 477 BCE to 388 BCE. OBVERSE: Female head facing left with hair pulled back in low bun behind ear, wearing earring. REVERSE: Four-part incuse square. Compare Bodenstedt-9. Size 2.56 grams, 10 mm.

Phokaia was a Greek city in ancient Ionia and was located on the western coast of Anatolia or present day Turkey. After the Lydians, another civilization located in Asia Minor, the Phocaeans were among the world’s first people to strike and use coins as money. Their first coins, such as this nice specimen, were made of electrum, a naturally occurring alloy of silver and gold.
