Roman Republic, L. Papius., Rome, ca. 79 BCE. OBVERSE: Head of Juno Sospita right, wearing goat’s skin headdress; behind, amphora. REVERSE: L PAPI in exergue, griffin springing right; below, hydria. Crawford 384/1. Size: 3.95 grams, 19 mm.

The obverse side of this denarius depicts Juno as “Sospita” or the savior; she is the goddess that defends and protects the Romans. On the reverse side of this coin is depicted a griffin, a legendary creature with the body and back legs of a lion, the head and wings of an eagle. Griffins are commonly depicted as the protectors of item of great value and importance.
