Sold

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manteno culture, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A fine set of mold-formed pottery stamp seals with flat backs and conical handles. The smaller stamp depicts an abstract armadillo with a stylized head, a sinuous tail, and a carapace comprised of roughly two dozen raised triangular “scales.” The larger stamp presents an abstract bat form with perky ears, an upturned nose, a pair of wide wings with similar impressed triangular motifs as the armadillo, and a triangular tail beneath miniscule legs. Size of largest (bat): 1.875″ W x 2.75″ H (4.8 cm x 7 cm).

Condition: Armadillo stamp has small chip to handle, nicks and abrasions on front face and around peripheries, and softening to some finer details. Bat stamp has restoration to conical handle, chip to one ear, minor abrasions, and light softening to some finer details. Both stamps have nice earthen deposits throughout.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
