Sold

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful intaglio, hand-carved from a warm red-orange carnelian fragment, depicting a seated man in front of an incomplete sculpture. The man wears a helmet and a cloak, and holds a small sculpting tool to a large piece of marble in front of a wispy plant. The rectangular intaglio boasts finely-incised imagery, beveled sides, and a smooth verso. The carved stone is set within the rectangular bezel of a modern 18K gold ring with a thick band and wide shoulders. A fine, wearable example of elegant Roman artistry! Amethyst fragment for photography purposes only. Size (ring): 0.875″ W x 1″ H (2.2 cm x 2.5 cm); size (intaglio): 0.55″ L x 0.425″ W (1.4 cm x 1.1 cm); quality of gold: 18K; total weight: 16.5 grams; US ring size 9.

Condition: Wearable as shown. Intaglio is antique and ring setting is modern. Intaglio has surface wear and minor abrasions commensurate with age, light fading to incised details, and some minor scratch marks, otherwise intact and excellent. Gold ring has minor abrasions but is excellent otherwise. Three squares and “750” stamped on inside of band.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Frances Artuner collection, Belgium, acquired in the 1960s
