Early 20th C. African Senufo Wooden Heddle Pulley- Lot 162, Auction 3/25/2019

Sold

Western Africa, Ivory Coast, Senufo peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A fine wooden heddle pulley with a wide bifurcated body and a short handle. An abstract design is carved into the majority of the handle and is comprised of two lateral ovals and a three-lobed plume on the verso. Created and used by the Senufo peoples, this type of object is utilized on a narrow band loom to ease the movements of heddles (part of the looping mechanism of a loom). These objects, while functional, were often carved to showcase the ability of the weaver and hung over their workshop when not in use. Size: 3.25″ W x 5.25″ H (8.3 cm x 13.3 cm).

Condition: Old area of loss on obverse side of handle. Age-commensurate surface wear, with a hairline pressure fissure along the obverse side, and some wear to high-point areas, otherwise very good. Nice dark-brown patina throughout.

Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970
