4th C. African Komoland Terracotta Head- Lot 50, Auction 5/24/2018

Ancient West Africa, Nigeria, Komoland, ca. 4th century CE. A finely-detailed head, hand-built from grog-rich clay with a light-orange color. The object has a long insertion tang as a neck, and the top of the head is concave with a small central slit. The interesting countenance is comprised of almond-shaped eyes with puffy eye lids, a wide nose with stylized nostrils, full lips in a slight smile, and a large, vertically-striated beard. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 4.5″ H (11.4 cm); 5.125″ H (13 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Expected age-commensurate surface wear, small nicks to top of head and neck tang, with some discoloration, otherwise very good. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
