Early 20th C. African Lobi Wood Nude Figure- Lot 155b, Auction 12/27/2019

West Africa, Burkina Faso, Lobi peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved, light wood sculpture of an abstract standing, nude human figure with female characteristics who appears to be pregnant. This style of figure is called a “bateba,” a traditional doll carved by artisans in Lobi society and is believed to act on the behalf of the carver. Size: 3.75″ W x 25″ H (9.5 cm x 63.5 cm); 28.15″ H (71.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Lower legs/feet are missing. Stable crack through side of head and down one side of the body. With light deposits on surface and remains of some pigment. Form is nicely preserved.
