20th C. African Zela Wood Stool w/ Human Figures- Lot 226, Auction 11/26/2018

Sold

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zela people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A charming hand-carved wooden stool with three anthropomorphic legs, each in the form of an adult human figure of indeterminate sex holding a child. The carving style is without ornament, highlighting the important features of the figures without overly complicating the smooth lines of the wood. Around the edge of the seat, the wood has been finely incised into a rope-like motif. Size: 8.75″ W x 15.25″ H (22.2 cm x 38.7 cm)

Condition: Old losses – with one leg gone and parts of the base and top – as shown in photographs. The stool stands easily on its own and the details of the remaining figures are nicely preserved. Rich patina on surface.

Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection
