Roman Leaded-Bronze Furniture Leg w/ Feline Head- Lot 31, Auction 12/27/2019

Sold

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fine cast leaded-bronze furniture leg of a near-miniature size for a smaller piece of furniture like a stool or a small cauldron. The leg has a curved body with a vertical arm presenting a stylized feline head, perhaps a lioness or a panther, with almond eyes, a short snout with slit-form nostrils, and four bared fangs in the gaping mouth. Decorative items like this one give us an idea of how everyday items in the Roman world would have looked – ornate and whimsical rather than utilitarian. Custom stone display stand included. Size: 0.4″ W x 2.8″ H (1 cm x 7.1 cm); 3.7″ H (9.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Original foot missing. Leg adhered to stone stand. Minor nicks to feline head, vertical arm, and curved leg, with fading to some finer details, and some minor abrasions. Light earthen deposits and gorgeous green patina throughout.

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
