Roman Glass Jar w/ Threadlike Trailing- Lot 39, Auction 8/26/2019

Sold

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A gorgeous free-blown flask composed of translucent, near-colorless glass with a slight concave base and smooth pontil scar, a globular body, a rounded shoulder, a tubular neck, and a slight, flared rim. The entirety of the exterior is covered in a singular applied trail of translucent glass which starts at the indented base and terminates just below the vessel’s rim. Areas of silvery iridescence add a colorful flair to this beautiful vessel. Size: 1.5″ W x 2.45″ H (3.8 cm x 6.2 cm)

Condition: Tiny chip from rim but otherwise in nice condition. Surface wear and minor abrasions commensurate with age, small loss to trailing on midsection of body. Nice earthen deposits as well as faint silver and rainbow iridescence throughout. Vessel possesses a pontil scar or mark which indicates that the vessel was free-blown. (The absence of such a mark would suggest that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
