Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fine and hollow cast-bronze example of a patera handle terminating in the head of a wolf. The handle has a fluted design with multiple small grooves running the length of the handle, and beneath the flared outer portion are scrawling foliate motifs. The patera was used for serving drinks and food at banquets, or for carrying libations used in religious ceremonies and funerals. High-quality bronze examples like this often have either a ram or wolf head finial on their handles. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Condition: This item is the handle from a patera. Minor nicks to wolf head, handle, and flared lower portion, with softening to some finer details, and slight bending to flared lower portion. Light earthen deposits and fabulous green and russet patina throughout, with some areas of original bronze exposed.
