Sold

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pair of domed or boss-shaped gilded cast bronze phalerae, each a sculpted button awarded to and worn by Roman soldiers on their breastplates. Each is in the form of a shield boss with incised decorations on its face. Four pins on the underside of each allowed it to be attached to clothing. Size of largest (they are similar in size): 1.1″ W (2.8 cm)

Condition: Both are intact. Slight bending to pins on the back and some encrustation. Pale green patina shines through where the gilding has come away, with most of the gilding remaining.
