Sold
Northern Italy, Etruria, ca. 500 BCE. A lovely Etruscan pottery amphora of a classic form with a bulbous body upon a raised round foot, a flared rim at the top, and gracefully curved twin bifurcated handles adjoining shoulder to neck, all hand painted via the black figure technique with intriguing iconography featuring a figure standing in composite profile and holding a garment draped across the arms and a blooming rod – and an incomplete figure on the opposite side. Beyond this figural iconography, various decorative palmette leaves and intricate design motifs adorn the field and areas between the figures. Size: 5.5″ in diameter x 8.875″ H (14 cm x 22.5 cm)
Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces with surface wear and losses to the painted program as shown. Major portion of the reverse restored. Old collection number – 1884.216 – written on the base in red; this red numbering suggests that it may have once been in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
