Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A handsome cast-bronze bull figurine, captured in a classic striding pose with his head turned slightly to the right. The animal’s details are realistically presented with a proud muscular body, locomotive legs, a wavy dewlap, an arched back, and the bushy tip of the tail on its posterior. The powerful head is denoted by its bulbous snout, flat forehead, petite ears, and almond-shaped eyes, not to mention the pair of nubbin-shaped horns. The bull and its symbolic likeness has a significant history thoughout the ancient world. Bulls were central to the Roman’s cult of Mithras with their central tenant of tauroctony, the sacred slaying of the bull. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Condition: Bull missing portion of tail. Age-commensurate surface wear, fading to some details, and some discoloration, otherwise excellent. Light earthen deposits within recessed areas, and gorgeous green patina throughout.
