2 Miniature Roman Glass Vessels – Flask + Oinochoe- Lot 95, Auction 5/31/2019

Sold

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A beautiful set of two free-blown miniature glass vessels. First is a petite flask, of blue-green glass and a translucent composition, with a footed base, a spherical body, wide tubular neck, thin rim, and a trio of applied trail handles. Second is a miniscule spouted oinochoe, of emerald-green glass and a near transparent composition, with a round but stable base, globular body, a pinched spout, and an applied trail handle with a small suspension loop on top. Vessels like these examples were used to contain small amounts of scented oils or other precious liquids and would have been a common sight among ladies’ toiletry items. A gorgeous ensemble! Size of largest (oinochoe): 2.75″ H (7 cm).

Condition: Both vessels have age-commensurate surface wear, light fading to coloration, and minor roughness to handles and bases, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout, and faint silvery and rainbow iridescence in scattered areas.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
