Rare Nazca Polychrome Pottery Bird Vessel- Lot 85, Auction 4/4/2019

Sold

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 250 BCE to 125 CE. A wonderful polychrome terracotta vessel in the form of a bird in flight with wings and tailfeathers skillfully painted in hues of grey, cream, black, and red – and a fabulous visage presenting eyes that exude determination and a finely modeled open beak – as if the bird is issuing a call to those below. Note that most Nazca avian vessels we come across are stirrup vessels. This example, for its form as well as its dynamic presence, is quite special. Size: 9.25″ L x 6.5″ W (23.5 cm x 16.5 cm); 15″ H (38.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Expected surface wear with some scuffs and abraded areas as shown. Small chip to the tailfeathers with a bit of touched up paint here. An impressed area and stable minute Y-shaped fissure on bottom. This said, the piece is otherwise intact and has nicely painted and modeled details.

Provenance: private Georgia, USA collection, COA from Gustavo Souto of Prehispanico, NYC and San Juan, Puerto Rico, April 7, 2018; ex-private German collection from the 1960’s
