Pre-Columbian, south coast of Peru, proto-Nazca period, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A hard-carved wooden figure, probably made to be votive, of a woman with long breasts and a simian-like face complete with large, pursed lips. The figure has an elongated head, perhaps referencing the practice of skull-shaping known from this region, thought to indicate kin groups or social castes. Amazing to find a piece of wood of this age, and in such good condition – a testament to the very dry conditions of this region. Size: 2.65″ W x 5.7″ H (6.7 cm x 14.5 cm); 6.1″ H (15.5 cm) on included custom stand.
Condition: Incredible preservation of wood for its age. Crack through center of body and on either side of the base. Rich patina from age and handling.
