Pair of Jalisco Sheepface Female Figures- Lot 126, Auction 12/27/2019

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two amusing hand-built terracotta figures, both with characteristic “sheepface” features such as coffee-bean-shaped eyes, pointed ears with round earspools, thin mouths, conical noses, and tall foreheads. Both are female, with breasts and slight paunches that may indicate pregnancy. Each wears striped trousers and a beaded necklace detailed in white paint atop a deep-red slip. Size of largest: 1.8″ W x 5.1″ H (4.6 cm x 13 cm)

Condition: Both figures are missing one arm. Both have their other arm repaired. One also has its neck repaired, and has adhesive on the bottom of its feet.

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
