Pachacamac Textile Fragment – Incredibly Complex Design- Lot 103, Auction 5/24/2018

Sold

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Pachacamac culture, ca. 200 to 1000 CE. A beautiful, hand-woven textile comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama) fibers in a variety of colors including ruby, emerald, turquoise, wheat, cream, jet, and amethyst. Amongst the sea of pigment is an immensely complex design depicting a larger abstract figure. The inverted white triangle in the center serves as the chest, with a purple mouth and gold and black eyes above, his arms below holding a pair of rectangular shields flanking miniscule feet, and his head sprouting an enormous set of curled horns. A figural headdress resting in-between the horns depicts an abstract face with a smaller pair of horns above. A repeating wave-like pattern decorates the band underneath the figure. One of the most intriguing textiles we have ever seen! Mounted on beige fabric backing. Size (textile): 16.5″ W x 24.5″ H (41.9 cm x 62.2 cm); size (backing): 24″ W x 33″ H (61 cm x 83.8 cm).

Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, light fraying to interior designs and peripheries, some discoloration and fading to different colors, and some creasing, otherwise intact and very good.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex Westermann collection, Germany
