Moche Bi-Chrome Figural Canteen- Lot 83, Auction 9/24/2018

Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, probably later in the period, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A charming ceramic canteen with a human-faced spout. The body of the canteen is a wide cylinder, painted white on its flat sides and a pale reddish-brown on the curved center. The head projects from one side, with its headdress in the form of a flared mouth with an unpronounced rim. The face has wide, staring eyes, a diminutive nose, a small mouth, and prominent ears. A black diamond pattern flowing down from below the chin is still just visible on one side of the vessel body. Size: 6.2″ W x 9.2″ H (15.7 cm x 23.4 cm)

Condition: Small chip from rim and stable crack down neck extending from the chip. Otherwise in nice condition, with nice remaining pigment, including some of the original black on one side.
