Lot of 2 Chupicuaro Pottery Figures- Lot 220, Auction 5/27/2020

Sold

Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A wonderful pair of hand-built terracotta figures in two different styles. First is a squat female figure with short legs, delineated genitalia, bent arms, flat shoulders, almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, and a tall brow; this figure has its burnished exterior detailed in an earthy red tone. The second figure has nubbin-shaped feet, large thighs, bent arms with hands held at its chest, a thick neck, ovoid eyes, a parted mouth, elongated ears, and a wide and tall brow; the figure has surfaces hues of pale orange and russet, but is unpainted. A lovely couple of Chupicuaro works! Size (smaller): 4.2″ H (10.7 cm); size (larger): 5.375″ H (13.7 cm).

Condition: Smaller figure has repair to brow, losses to toes and surface pigment, and evidence of an old collection sticker on back of head. Larger figure has minor chips and nicks, but is otherwise intact. Both figures have age-commensurate surface wear and earthen and mineral deposits throughout.

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields and Riverbend Gallery
