Rare Huari Polychrome Pan Pipes, TL Tested

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 6th to 9th century CE. A beautiful and functional pottery pan flute with four tubular pipes of differing lengths to create four distinct notes. The flute has a wide top with four open cavities to blown across, and a lengthy body which gradually tapers as the tubes get shorter. The top section near the tone holes are decorated with a few bands in dark grey, red, black, and yellow, with the last bar displaying a trio of red diamonds with white spots enclosed in a yellow border. This example produces lovely sounds when used as an instrument. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 2.25″ W x 14″ H (5.7 cm x 35.6 cm); 14.375″ H (36.5 cm) on included custom stand.

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

Condition: Flute repaired across midsection from two large pieces with light stabilization material and adhesive residue along break lines. Surface wear and minor abrasions commensurate with age, small chips to tone holes, body, and base, with light fading to pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout. Flute produces nice sound when used.
